I was excited to hear this week's TTA because it got me thinking about what I can do this year to continue teaching my children about service. Those of you who know me, know service is a big part of my life. Doesn't matter if it just a small plate of cookies to someone in need or making dinner for a mother who just had a baby. I love it. I love to brighten people's day. I hope and pray that I can teach my children the importance of service. Here's a scripture that I love "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40). I think that's what makes serving others easy for me is remember this scripture. Who wouldn't want to serve the Lord. I'm amazed at how this blogging community is on service. I'm always reading different acts of service that people have performed.
"Opportunities for service to others are limitless. Kind words and deeds can lift burdens and gladden hearts. Sharing the gospel is a great service with eternal consequences. One true key to happiness is to labor for the happiness of others."
I remember every Christmas growing up we would get a box full of goods and deliver it to a family in need on Christmas Eve. I will always remember the feeling I got when doing this with my family. One act of service I'm recieving right now is I have a great neighbor that every time she makes wheat bread, she brings me a loaf because she knows I love it. When I was pregnant with Ashlyn I was in bed on IVs and lady who I didn't hardly know, who has now turned out to be a GREAT friend, would take Paige to preschool every morning for me. That was such a releif for me and I will never forget it.
Last year for enrichment we made these little calendars. You start on December 1 and go all the way to Christmas. Every day there is a scripture, a song and a service that we are to perform. It was great for the kids to actually help in serving. If anyone wants a copy let me know.
We didn't get to this last year, but we will do it this year. It's a count down to Christmas and under each of the dates theres an act of service to perform. This was given to me by the same friend that took Paige to preschool.
So whatever type of service we do, big or small, remember we are serving the Lord too.

You're wonderful! I've been trying to think of a fun advent calendar to make, and I love the idea of having service be a part of it. Thanks, as always, for such great ideas!
So cute. I would definitely like a copy. We are doing something similar, but mine is just in a boring jar. =)
Thanks for always sharing your great ideas.
And how awesome to have a neighbor that wants to bring you homemade bread all the time!
What a darling advent calendar Karri! Service is something my family needs to do more of. Thanks for the reminder!
Karri!!! I LOVE that! Please send me a copy of the dates/scripture/service. I would love to do that with my family. You never cease to amaze me with all your inspiring ideas! THANK YOU!!!
P.S. Is the advent calendar your neighbor gave you made out of paper? It's darling.
Loving this and the darling calendar!
Copy me in on the email- I would love it!
Love it!! How did you make it??
What cute ideas. I would love a copy of the December thing. Is it something you can just email? I really do need to remember to think outside myself and serve others. I always feel much happier when I do fun things for others. And I love that your friend brings you wheat bread. And don't you think you'll always remember those simple services when you were in great need - like taking kids to preschool for you. Sorry for this long comment! aakk!
Oh! I'm so jealous-jealous-jealous of this calendar! And I don't get jealous easily! How can I convince you to to a tutorial on your blog to show us how to make one?.... Is it made of paper?
I guess I should admit that I am also jealous of your wheat-bread-bearing-neighbor.
(raising hand & waving it frantically...)
ME! ME! ME! ME! ME! I would love an email with the info! I just re-read your post and saw the tidbit that you'd email a copy.
ME! ME! ME! ME!
